Service Charge vs Interest — What's the difference?

We are transparent about what we charge. Here is exactly why our fee is halal — and how it is nothing like riba.

Haqpay Service Charge (Halal)

  • A flat, one-time fee agreed upfront before you borrow
  • Does NOT grow or increase over time
  • The same whether you repay in 1 month or 3 months
  • Covers real operational costs: processing, verification, platform maintenance
  • Permitted in Islamic finance as Ujrah (administrative fee)
  • You always know the exact total you will repay — no surprises

Interest / Riba (Haram)

  • Grows the longer you take to repay — punishes you for delays
  • A percentage of the loan added on top continuously
  • Can double or triple what you owe if you miss payments
  • Not linked to any real service — it is money made purely from lending money
  • Explicitly forbidden (haram) in the Quran and Sunnah
  • Creates debt traps that harm borrowers and communities

Example

With Haqpay (Service Charge)

You borrow ₦50,000. A flat service charge of ₦2,500 is agreed upfront. You repay ₦52,500 total — whether you pay in 1 month or 3 months. The charge never changes.

With Interest (Banks / Loan Apps)

You borrow ₦50,000 at 10% monthly interest. After 1 month you owe ₦55,000. After 3 months you owe ₦66,550. The debt keeps growing the longer you take.
